First-Time Surrogate

Okay, so I'm TOTALLY cheating on today's Sincerely Fro' Me to You. Don't get me wrong, you will see pictures that probably won't show up in an album, especially since most of them show me with milk all over my pants and are close-ups of my hairy arms. But I couldn't resist showing pictures of my first time as a surrogate.

You see, we'd been looking for a female cat or two to be hunters for us, as the yard next door has tons of fruit trees, which attracts rats of all shapes and sizes. Ninja and Tom (below) are perfectly happy to lay around and continue getting fatter on dry food that doesn't have to be killed first. Females, it turns out, are the better hunters.

So yesterday when we heard of a litter of kittens being abandoned on a front porch, we went to investigate. There was only one female, but the other two males in the pictures below went to a woman at work who is a wonderful (if a little crazy) cat lady.

They didn't know what to do with the cat food, even though we soaked it in milk. So we got an eye dropper and heated up a bit of milk. You can tell I don't have the mothering instinct, as I look like I'm holding them in a vice grip and am about to inject them with something. At first I got milk all over the place:

But the boys (both gray) caught on really quickly:

and soon they were off to explore:

At first the female stiff-armed me, like she was rebelling against the whole process:

And she wasn't quite sure what I was trying to jam in her mouth:

But she got the knack, soon, too:

and was then on her prissy little way. After hissing at me, she wandered back into her box and promptly fell asleep. I think she's going to be a little spitfire.

Any thoughts on names for this bundle of fur?

Oooohhh... this post brought back so many memories!!! My sister once acted as a surrogate to a gray kitty that was motherless at less than a week old. That eye dropper looks oh, so familiar. My sis even received special permission to bring Koa (the kitten) to school in a basket with a heating pad.
